Check out Your Living Room CIC's new podcast episode where Jan & I are interviewed by the lovely Diane about what it's like to work on the frontline as a Practitioner who supports Clients with Extreme Hoarding Behaviours:
Hoarding Tendencies are a mental health condition - NOT a lifestyle choice! And something that I have both personal & professional experience of. I am professionally trained & am proud to offer support to clients with Hoarding challenges.
Whether it is you, or a loved one that is struggling, please reach out for help. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Hoarding behaviours are far more common then many realise & when an individual becomes triggered, this behaviour can sometimes spiral out of control, causing a person's mental health to deteriorate & their home to become completely dysfunctional over time.
One of the greatest barriers to helping people with Hoarding Behaviours, is that, like many addictive behaviours, there is a lot of shame & secrecy involved. As such, many individuals who really need support go completely unnoticed for decades. Because Hoarding is still a subject that is often hidden & rarely spoken about, it can lead individuals into believing that it is just them with this problem... This is honestly not the case & there are empathetic Professionals, such as myself & my team here at Prim & Proper Homes.
Hoarding TV shows that sensationalise the amount of stuff, but focus so little on the reality of this being a mental health condition do little to help inform the collective. Please know - that there are Professionals out there who are trying to improve Awareness of this condition & improve the process of getting help so that individuals are able to diagnosed sooner & receive support quicker.
Please be kind to others wherever you can. Because you truly never know what battles people face behind closed doors.
